About Rayalaseema University
Rayalaseema University is a State University established in the year 2008, by Act No. 29 of 2008 enacted by the Legislature of the State of Andhra Pradesh. Prior to this, the University was formally launched by the G.O.Ms. No.89, Higher Education (U.E.II) Department, dated 25^th June 2008. The University is named after the Rayas of Vijayanagara Empire – one of the most powerful rulers of South India during the 14-16 centuries AD. The Rayas of Vijayanagarawere were great patrons of learning, art, and literature. The University has an academic history which is more than 35 years old and it came into existence as Sri Venkateswara University Postgraduate Centre in 1977. It was established to impart higher education to the rural youth of the backward district of Kurnool which is also a drought prone region. To meet this challenge the University started two courses - One in Economics with specialization in Area Planning and Regional Development and the other in Operations Research and Statistical Quality Control which also catered to the needs of the industry. The Centre was housed in a small building to start with and later, in 1979, was shifted to the old municipal office buildings. The Centre was shifted once again to University owned building at B. Tandrapadu, a small village near Kurnool, in 1990.
