Which Indian badminton player won the women’s singles title of Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament on 24 January 2016?:- P.V. Sindhu

Explanation:- Two-time World Championship bronze-medallist, India’s P.V. Sindhu made a rousing start to the new season as she clinched the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold title after defeating Scotland’s Kristy Gilmour in straight games in the final in Penang on Sunday.

Third seed Sindhu, who had also won the Malaysia Masters in 2013, provided herself a great start to the year by winning the summit clash 21-15, 21-9 to pocket $9,000 as prize money. This is Sindhu’s second title in three tournaments after she also clinched the Macau Open crown last year in November.

This was the World No.12 Indian’s first win over Gilmour in two meetings, having lost their previous encounter at the 2013 French Open. Kirsty bagged $4,560 for finishing as runner-up.

 

 


Which West Indian cricketing great officially retired from international cricket on 22 January 2016, almost 22 years after his international cricket debut?:-  Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Explanation:- West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul officially retired from international cricket on 22 January 2016. He announced his retirement seven months after selectors opted to discard the veteran and push for a youth-oriented policy. He was dumped before the home series against Australia in June 2015.

Chanderpaul made his test debut against England in 1994 and went on to amass 11,867 runs at an average of 51.37 in his 164 tests for the Caribbean side. His total is the seventh highest of all time, and he finished behind Brian Lara’s 11,953 as the second most prolific West Indian batsman.
He scored 30 test centuries and 66 half centuries and had a high score of 203 not out. He also scored 8,778 runs in 268 one-day internationals at 41.60.

Uttar Pradesh won 2014-2015 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy by defeating which team?:- Baroda

Explanation:- Uttar Pradesh on 20 January 2016 won its maiden Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy with a 38-run win over two- time champions Baroda in the final played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. It was Uttar Pradesh’s ninth straight win in the tournament, including five in the preliminary league phase and three more in the super league stage.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a Twenty20 cricket domestic championship, named after a famous Indian cricketer, Syed Mushtaq Ali. It is organized by Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI), among the teams from Ranji Trophy. The 2008-09 season was the inaugural season for this trophy.

Gujarat was the winner of 2014-15 season of the tournament.

Sydney International women's doubles title won by Sania Mirza and her swiss partner?:- Martina Hingis

Explanation: 'Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis’ inspiring run continued  as they lifted their second trophy of the season with the WTA Apia International title after clinching their 30th win a row, in Sydney on Friday.

At one stage almost set to lose the final, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis came up with a stupendous performance to earn a fantastic come-from-behind victory and clinch the Sydney International women's doubles title, Seeded No.1, Sania and Martina were down and almost out when they were trailing 1-6, 2-5 against French third seeds Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic. But the Indo-Swiss combine staged a remarkable comeback to eventually win the second set 7-5 and the super tie-break 10-5 in an hour and 14 minutes.

This is the Indo-Swiss pair's 30th win in a row, second title of 2016 . They have now won seven titles on the trot with the Brisbane International crown coming last week and five of them in 2015. The Indo-Swiss partnership is also an impeccable 11-1 in finals.
It was the 11th title together for the Indo-Swiss pair as continuing the good show from 2015 when they won 9 titles including the year-end WTA finale.

Ashwin was declared as No.1 cricket bowler by ICC. Ravichandran Ashwin was born on September 17, 1986, Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. Ravichandran Ashwin made his debut in test cricket match between India v West Indies at Delhi, Nov 6-9, 2011 and in ODI India v Sri Lanka at Harare, Jun 5, 2010. Ashwin is the only bowler of recent times apart from Sri Lanka's Ajantha Mendis to bowl the carrom ball. With two centuries and five half-centuries in his Test career so far, Ashwin has earned the reputation of being a bowling all-rounder. He was a recipient of the Arjuna Award in 2014 and the BCCI's international cricketer of the year for the 2012–13 season.
