Establishment of National Marine Police Training Institute
  1. National Marine Police Training Institute (MPTI) is to be established  at Pindara Village, Gujarat.
  2. The task for establishment of MPTI has been entrusted with Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) Ministry of Home Affair will administer this institute.
India launched World’s largest Station Redevelopment Programme (SRP)
  1. Indian Railways on 8 February 2017 launched the first phase of the World’s largest Station Redevelopment Programme (SRP). It is lanched to improve passenger experience by providing amenities like digital signage, escalators / elevators, self-ticketing counters, executive lounges, luggage screening machines, walkways, holding areas for passengers, grand and distinctive roofing and flooring, free and paid Wi-Fi etc.
  2. Overall 400 railway stations will be redeveloped under this ambitious programme and in the first phase, 23 stations will be bid out some of which include Chennai Central, Ranchi, Udaipur City, Indore, Yesvantpur, Bangalore Cantt., Visakhapatnam, Howrah, Kamakhya, Faridabad, Jammu Tawi, Secunderabad, Vijayawada, Kozhikode and Bhopal. Railways will provide approximately 140 acres of encroachment free land at these stations to the private developers on a 45 year lease.
  3. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is the strategic advisor for this program and based on the commercial assessment conducted by them and several rounds of discussions held with the developers and zonal railways.
7 Supreme Court judges on 8 February 2017 convened in open court to initiate suo motu contempt action
  1. For the first time in the country’s history, 7 Supreme Court judges on 8 February 2017 convened in open court to initiate suo motu contempt action against sitting judge of the Calcutta High Court Justice C.S. Karnan
  2. The Bench led by Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar ordered Justice Karnan to appear in person before the Bench on 13 February 2017. Contempt proceedings were initiated for continuously levelling allegations against the Madras HC chief justice and other judges.
  3. Justice Karnan was once summoned to the Supreme Court and warned in person by then Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur for his offensive behaviour towards the Chief Justice of the High Court and for imputing casteist motives on his fellow judges.
Cabinet approves PMGDISHA
  1. PMGDISHA is expected to be one of the largest digital literacy programmes in the world. The Union Cabinet has approved ‘Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan’ (PMGDISHA) to make six crore rural households digitally literate.
  2. The outlay for this project is Rs. 2,351.38 crores to usher in digital literacy in rural India by March,2019.
Ministry of Mines to launch TAMRA portal
  1. The Mines Ministry has launched TAMRA (Transparency, Auction Monitoring and Resource Augmentation) for transparency in the system.
  2. TAMRA will be an interactive platform for all stakeholders to compress the timeliness for statutory and other clearances and other activities.
India’s first riverfront global Fest
  1. This fest will be India’s first music & dance festival.
  2. A stellar line-up of Indian & international artistes will enthrall over 10000 spectators at the maiden Amaravati Global Music and Dance Festival from Feb 10-13 as directed by globally acclaimed violin virtuoso L Subramaniam
     
Annual Maritime Power Conference – 2017
  1. The National Maritime Foundation (NMF) is conducting its Annual Maritime Power Conference-2017 in New Delhi
  2. The NMF was established in 2005 to provide a common platform for discourse between maritime-related institutions, organisations and disciplines, within the country and abroad.
  3. The theme for this year is “The Blue Economy: Concept, Constituents and Development”
Kylleng Phendengsohiong Mawthabah (KPM) Uranium Mining Project lancuhed in Meghalaya
  1. Uranium mineralization in Meghalaya has been found over a large area around Domiasiat, Wahkyn, Lostoin.
  2. Uranium Corporation of India Ltd. has already made a plan to develop the mineral resources at Domiasiat under the name of “Kylleng Phendengsohiong Mawthabah (KPM) Uranium Mining Project”.
SC approved plan to verify mobile phone users through Aadhaar
  1. The Supreme Court has approved the government‘s plan to record the identification details of mobile subscribers through an e-KYC (Know Your Customer) mechanism linked to Aadhaar in a bid to enhance national security and prevent fake users.
  2. The mechanism would cover at least 100 crore mobile phone subscribers, 90% of whom use pre-paid cards.

Andhra Pradesh’s first Smart Police Station launched
  1. Andhra Pradesh’s first Smart Police Station started functioning on 6 February 2017 at Nagarampalem in Guntur city.
  2. The station, which has the look and feel of a corporate-style office, was inaugurated by the state’s Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
