National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in Orissa was established in 1961. It is one of the premier national level Institutions for technical education in the country and is funded by the Government of India. It was then known as Regional Engineering College - Rourkela. Owing to its contribution for providing quality education in the field of Engineering, Science and Technology, NIT Rourkela was accorded the status of Deemed University and renamed as National Institute of Technology Rourkela in 2002. The Institute offers courses leading to the degree of B.Tech. in Mechanical, Electrical, Ceramic, Civil, Chemical, Materials and Metallurgical, Mining, Computer Science and Engineering, Applied Electronics and Communication Engineering. The Institute also offers Post Graduate courses in Engineering & Science leading to the degree of M.Tech. in several disciplines like Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgical, Chemical and Computer Science and Engineering, Master of Science (in Physics, Chemistry and Applied Mathematics) and Masters in Computer Applications (M.C.A.).
