About Indian Institute Of Technology Bhu - Iit Varanasi
IIT (BHU) is an upgraded Institute of BHU, in other words the ‘Institute of Technology’ belonging to Banaras Hindu University has now been given the status of an IIT. The conversion of IT-BHU into IIT (BHU), Varanasi was passed by Lok Sabha on march 24, 2011. The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill 2011, has been already tabled in Rajya Sabha. The institutes origin can be traced back to 1919 during the days of freedom struggle. At that time 3 Engineering and Technological Institutions were established by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. These institutes were the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) in 1919, the College of Mining and Metallurgy (MINMET) in 1923 and the College of Technology (TECHNO). However, the institute emerged into a full-fledged Institute of Technology in 1971 when, BENCO, MINMET and TECHNO were merged to form the IT-BHU to provide a strong and integrated educational base. Upon the recommendation of committees constituted by Ministry of Human Resource Development (Professors Joshi and Anand Krishnan), for the conversion of the Institute into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Though, the IT BHU is being integrated with the IITs, the Banaras Hindu University would not be bifurcated in the process.
