About Doon University
Doon University is a Public Residential University established by the Government of Uttarakhand by a Legislative Act and recognized by the U.G.C. under 12 (B). It came into existence through Doon University Bill, 2005 (Uttaranchal Adhiniyam Sankhaya 18 of 2005). It was passed by the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly and assented to by the Governor on April 23, 2005. It was published in the Uttarakhand Gazette on April 26, 2005. On 9th May 2009 its statutes were approved and the University started its first academic session on 6th August 2009. The need for setting up a Doon University originated due to the lack of excellence in higher education and the intention to impart socially and economically relevant education. The University follows a Semester System. One academic year will have 2 Semesters; the First Semester starts in July and the Second Semester in January. Each course is for the duration of 1 semester and it is assigned a specific number of credits in terms of contact hours. The number of credits to be assigned to a course is determined by the School. It is mandatory to complete a minimum number of credits for a particular Programme. The University follows a Credit System of Study, which allows a continuous evaluation of a student’s performance and the flexibility to allow a student to select a number of Courses of his/her choice at a pace suited to his/her ability, subject to fulfilment the minimum requirements for continuation in the Programme. Each Course in the Programme is designated by the Course Number having certain number of Credits, which describe its weightage and contact hours. Usually, for 15 hours of contact there is 1 Credit point. The Campus is surrounded by Shivalik hills and Sal forest which is ideal for academics. The University is introducing 5 year integrated Program in M.Sc. (Economics) with the exit option at Bachelor level with the Honours degree. Similarly, 5 year integrated Program is also going to be launched in the School of Communication. The institute already has 5 year Integrated Masters programmes in 3 foreign languages, namely German, Spanish and Chinese. Location - The main campus of the University is located in an area of 55 acres at Kedarpur, Dehradun. A second campus is proposed to be established on 100 acres of land at Sahaspur. Departments
