Nepal, China hold first ever military exercise

  1. Nepal and China will hold the first-ever joint military exercise named ‘Sagarmatha Friendship-2017’ from 17 April 2017. (Sagarmatha is the Nepali name of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, that is bordering between Nepal and China)
  2. The joint excercise was done with a special focus on combating terror and disaster management. 

Indian wins top prize at UN challenge for open source tool

  1. An Indian software engineer Abdulqadir Rashik has won the top prize at a global challenge for an open-source tool and 'Unite Ideas UNGAViz Textual Analysis and Visualisation Challenge' for his Global Policy.
  2. Open Source tool enables users to interactively view UN General Assembly resolutions and gain a deeper understanding of the voting patterns of member states.  

PM launches GNFC’s cashless/less cash township model across 12 States

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a cashless/less cash township model in Nagpur developed by Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd (GNFC), across 81 townships in 12 States and thus GNFC’s township at Bharuch in Gujarat became India’s first cashless township after demonetization.
  2. These townships will deliver 2.5 lakh cashless transactions per day, translating into 9 crore cashless transactions in a year. 

United States used one of the most powerful bomb on Afghanistan terrorist location

  1. GBU-43 was the name of one of the most powerful bomb that was dropped on Afghanistan by the United States on 13 April 2017 to targeted a series of caves used by Islamic State militants in the country’s Nangarhar province. At least 36 persons were killed in the attack.
  2. GBU-43 is one of the largest non-nuclear bombs ever used in the battlefield and also known by another name – ‘Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (MOAB)’ while the media nicknamed it as ‘Mother of All Bombs’ developed by Albert L Weimorts, Jr. of Air Force Research Laboratory. It weighs 9,797 kgs and is about 20 feet long. It is capable of burrowing through 200 feet of earth and 60 feet of concrete before detonating.
  3. This bomb was first tested in March 2003 at the time of US led invasion of Iraq. The test resulted in a huge mushroom cloud that could be seen as far away from 32 km. Russia has simillar but more lethal bomb FOAB nicknamed as Father of all Bombs.

British-Indian educationist named ‘Asian Businesswoman of the Year'
  1. Asha Khemka was named 'Asian Businesswoman of the Year' at an event in Birmingham, England. 
  2. She was also honoured with one of the UK’s top civilian awards Dame, the female equivalent of knighthood in 2014 and has since won several accolades for her work in education in Nottingham.

Malala to become youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace
  1. Malala Yousafzai - 19-year-old Pakistani education activist, the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize has become the youngest United Nations Messenger of Peace. 
  2. Malala will be appointed by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on April 10, 2017, and it will help to promote girl education around the world.

Landmark anniversary of the purchase of Alaska celebrated
  1. 150th landmark anniversary was observed for the purchase of Alaska by the United States from the Russian Empire on 20 March 1867 for 7.2 million dollars, at a price of approximately two cents per acre and became the 49th state of the United States.
  2. The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on 11 May 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on 3 January 1959.
  3. Alaska is one of the richest US states thanks to its abundance of natural resources, such as petroleum, gold and fish, as well as its vast expanse of many tourist locations.

First major world city to have an ultra-low emission zone to tackle rising levels of air pollution
  1. London is all set to become first major world city to have an ultra-low emission zone to tackle rising levels of air pollution, as announced on 5 April 2017.
  2. London mayor Sadiq Khan on 5 April announced that from 8 April 2017 the new zone will be launched, when most polluting cars, vans and motorbikes will have to pay 12.50 pounds to drive through central London, while buses, coaches and HGVs will pay 100 pounds.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has been selected for another prestigious award - ‘Transformative Chief Minister’ by the US India Business Council and he would be receiving coveted award at second annual West Coast summit which to be held in California on May 8.

2 ILO conventions approved

The government has approved ratification of two fundamental conventions of International Labour Organization to address concerns related to child labour. They are Minimum Age Convention and Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention.
