Haryana launched Operation Durga to ensure women Safety

  1. Haryana government has launched ‘Operation Durga’ to ensure women safety in the state which is in similar of Uttar Pradesh’s ‘Anti-Romeo Squad’.
  2. Under this operation, the 'Flying Squad' is patrolling those areas where anti-social elements are committing crimes against women.

Robert Taylor noted pioneer in field of Computer Science passed away

  1. Taylor passed away at the age of 85 at his home in Woodside, California on 13 April 2017. Computer scientist Robert Taylor played vital roles in creating the internet, personal computer and the mouse, apart from numerous other innovations. Taylor was the creator of Arpanet, a single computer network to link with the others that would evolve into what we now know as the internet.
  2. He had correctly predicted the network would one day become an efficient and necessary utility for the public.
  3. His team also developed the networking technology Ethernet and a what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) word processing program called Bravo that would become the basis for Microsoft Word.
  4. He also played a key role in the creation of the computer mouse.

 

Telangana state’s Assembly passed the Bill to enhance the reservations for Muslims

  1. Telangana state’s Assembly on 16 April 2017 passed the Bill to enhance the reservations for Muslims from 4% to 12% for admission into educational institutions and for the State services from current reservation for Muslims is at 4%, while for Scheduled Tribes, it is at 6% in the state.
  2. The Bill, termed as historical by the ruling TRS and the AIMIM, received support from the Congress and the CPI (Marxist) even as the BJP opposed the Bill claiming that reservation on the basis of religion was against the constitutional norms and see as minority appeasement policy.

Trial run of India’s first vistadome railway coach was inaugurated

  1. Trial run of India’s first vistadome railway coach was inaugurated on 16 April 2017. This coach has been attached to Visakhapatnam-Kirandul passenger train that passes through the picturesque Araku Valley of Andhra Pradesh.
  2. Thus, the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul passenger train became the first train in the country to have a vistadome railway coach.
  3. The most unique feature of Vistadome coach is that it has transparent glasses installed on its roof that offer a breathtaking view of the hills and valleys to the tourists that visit Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh along with other features that are also state-of-the-art coach are LED lights, rotable seats and GPS based info system, etc.

Deendayal Rasoi Yojna launched in Madhya Pradesh
  1. Following in the lines of state run Amma Canteens, Madhya Pradesh government started its ambitious ‘Deendayal Rasoi Yojana’ under which subsidised meals will be available at Rs 5 per plate to people, especially the economically disadvantaged sections of society.
  2. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the scheme at Gwalior.
  3. In the first phase, the scheme would be inaugurated in 49 districts.

Akshay Kumar’s portal ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ Laucnhed
  1. On the occasion of the 'Shaurya Diwas' on 9th April 2017, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched the website and app named 'Bharat Ke Veer', to facilitate the monetary contribution to the kin of soldier personnel killed in action and actor Akshay Kumar was the Guest of Honour during the function. 
  2. The amount so donated will be credited to the account of ‘Next of Kin’ of those Central Armed Police Force/Central Para Military Force soldiers
  3. 'Shaurya Diwas', which was organized to facilitate the CRPF with bravery awards and medals.
  4. The idea of launching such IT portal came to the mind of actor Akshay Kumar while he was watching a documentary film on terrorists, which showed how terror leaders financially support the families of the terrorist who carry out terror acts.
  5. Website was built and supported by National Informatics Centre (NIC) and powered by State Bank of India (SBI).
  6. To ensure maximum coverage, a cap of Rs. 15 lakh is imposed on donation and donors will be alerted if amount exceeds, so they can choose to divert part of the donation to another account or the corpus.

New name was proposed for Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC)
  1. Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) is the new proposed name for Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC), the apex policy-making body for indirect taxes, as announced on 25 March 2017.
  2. CBIC would supervise the work of all its field formations and directorates and assist the government in policy making in relation to GST, continuing central excise levy and customs functions.
  3. The CBIC will have 21 zones, 101 GST Tax payer Services Commissionerates comprising 15 sub-commissionerates, 768 Divisions, 3,969 Ranges, 49 Audit Commissionerates and 50 Appeals Commissionerates.

Tanushree Pareek first woman combat officer to be commissioned
  1. Tanushree Pareek, on 25 March 2017 became the first woman combat officer to be commissioned in the 51-year history of the Border Security Force (BSF) and was selected in the all-India exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in 2014.
  2. BSF, the country’s largest border guarding force, as she became force’s first-ever combat officer on 25 March 2017
  3. Tanushree Pareek also led the passing out parade of 67 trainee officers that was reviewed by Union home minister Rajnath Singh at the Border Security Force camp at Tekanpur (MP).
Kanha Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh) became the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot
  1. Kanha Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh) during March 2017 became the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot which was named as ‘Bhoorsingh’ (The Barasingha)
  2. By declaring a mascot of its own, Kanha is hoping to create a better connect with its visitors, especially the younger generation. It is worth mentioning that Barasingha is often known as the uniqueness of Kanha.
Independent regulator is approved to recommend passenger and freight fares and set service level benchmarks for Indian Railways
  1. Union government on 5 April 2017 approved setting up of Rail Development Authority (RDA) an independent regulator to recommend passenger and freight fares and set service level benchmarks for Indian Railways. 
  2. The Rail Development Authority (RDA) will be established as an independent regulatory body in New Delhi with an initial corpus of Rs. 50 crore. 
  3. RDA will act within parameters of Railway Act, 1989 and look after the following broad functions: tariff determination, ensuring fair play and level playing field for stakeholder investment in Railways, setting efficiency and performance standards, dissemination of information.
