Bhubaneswar becomes 1st Indian city to win Pierre L’enfant Awards 2017

  1. Odisha’s capital city, Bhubaneswar has become, the first Indian city that has won Pierre L’enfant Planning Excellence and Achievement Awards-2017.
  2. Smart City Bhubaneswar received this award for good and advanced town planning and engaging its residents in the planning process. 

Haryana's Ballabhgarh renamed as Balramgarh

  1. Haryana Chief Minister announced the renaming of Ballabgarh town in Faridabad as Balramgarh as was founded by Balram Singh in 1739. 
  2. Balramgarh formelly known as Ballabgarh is situated around 30 km from Delhi on National Highway-2, Ballabgarh is a town and a tehsil (sub-division).

Oorja Talent Hunt Tournament-2017 to be conducted by CRPF

  1. The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been tasked to conduct ‘Oorja’, – CAPFs Under-19 Football Talent Hunt Tournament – 2017.
  2. CAPFs will be jointly organizing the tournament under the aegis of All India Police Sports Control Board throughout the country from May 1-15, 2017.

Sankha Ghosh wins Jnanpith Award

  1. The 52nd Jnanpith Award was awarded to Bengali poet and literary critic Sankha Ghosh.
  2. Award was given to Mr. Gosh by President Pranab Mukherjee.
  3. He was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in 1977 and in the year 1999.

Kalpit Veerval scored 100% in JEE Main

  1. Kalpit Veerval has become the first person in history to score perfect 100% in the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Main to qualify for the prestigious IITs and other engineering colleges in the country. Though the cut-off to qualify was 81.
  2. JEE Main was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
  3. 17-year old Veerval from Rajasthan’s Udaipur topped the prestigious exam with a 100% score of 360/360.
  4. He had also topped the Indian Junior Science Olympiad and National Talent Search Examination in the past.

Vinod Khanna, popular Hindi film actor passed away at a hospital in Mumbai on 27 April 2017

  1. Vinod Khanna, the immensely popular Hindi film actor at the age of 70 passed away in Mumbai on 27 April 2017.
  2. He was a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member and 4-time Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Gurdaspur constituency of Punjab.
  3. Feted as one of the most handsome actors of the Hindi film industry, Khanna made his acting debut in 1968 with “Man Ka Meet”. 
  4. At the height of his popularity, Khanna surprised his fans when he took a break from acting for five years to join Osho Rajneesh at his Oregon ashram in the U.S. in 1982.
  5. He was last seen in the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Dilwale” in 2015.

Northeast India's largest IT hub opens in Tripura

  1. Northeast India's largest Information Technology (IT) hub was inaugurated at Agartala to boost employment and e-governance besides to export software technology.
  2. The Hub was set up at a cost of Rs. 50 crore and is the sixth hub in the Northeast region.

  1. The Centre is set to launch a scheme for students from higher educational institutions to volunteer to offer innovative, original and practical solutions to problems facing the country and get rewarded for their efforts fo 1 crore.
  2. The scheme is called IDEAS, or Innovations for Development of Efficient and Affordable Systems.

IPR Awareness Campaign launched

  1. The Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) has begun an IPR Awareness campaign in schools across the country in collaboration with the International Trademark Association.
  2. The campaign was kicked off at Kendriya Vidyalaya, RK Puram Sector 2, New Delhi.
  3. The National Intellectual Property Rights Policy was approved by the govt on May 12, 2016.

Youngest Indian chancellor bags Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Foundation award

  1. Dileep K Nair 38-year-old academician is currently the Chancellor of the North East Frontier Technical University (NEFTU) in Arunachal Pradesh and is youngest chancellor of any university in the nation
  2. He has bagged Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Foundation award for excellent performance in the field of education in Trivendurum, Kerala.
