World’s first women’s train completed 25 years

  1. On 5th May 2017, the Western Railway (WR) had started the maiden train exclusively for women commuters.
  2. At the time of launch of this train it had started it's service between Churchgate and Borivali and later extended to Virar, was well received by the commuters, who were till then forced to travel in cramped regular ladies compartments.

Raj Bihari Kumar appointed as the chairman of ICSSR

Braj Bihari Kumar, the editor of quarterly journals Dialogue and Chintan Srijan, has been appointed as the chairman of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) for the top post for a period of three years.

Padma Venkataraman bestowed with Avvaiyar award

  1. Tamil Nadu govt honoured social worker Padma Venkataraman with the state’s “Avvaiyar Award” for 2017.
  2. Padma, daughter of former President of India, the late R Venkataraman, was honoured for her efforts in the areas of women’s welfare and rehabilitation of leprosy-affected persons for the past 30 years.

Banganapalle mango gets a GI tag

  1. Banganapalle mango has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, making Andhra Pradesh the proprietor of the variety known for its sweetness.
  2. A GI tag indicates that the product comes from a specific region.Banganapalle mangoes have been grown for over 100 years in the State. It also known as Beneshan, Baneshan, Benishan, Chappatai and Safeda.

India to get world's highest railway bridge across Chenab river in J&K

  1. In around two years from now, the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir will be spanned by the world’s highest railway bridge that is expected to be 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower.
  2. The massive arch-shaped structure, being constructed at a cost of around Rs 1,100 crore in hostile terrain.The bridge forms a crucial link in the 111-km stretch between Katra and Banihal. The 1.315-km- long “engineering marvel” will connect Bakkal (Katra) and Kauri (Srinagar).
  3. The massive arch-shaped structure, being constructed at a cost of around Rs. 1,100 crores, will rise 359 m above the river bed.
  4. The bridge forms a crucial link in the 111-km stretch between Katra and Banihal, which is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project.

K Viswanath receives Dadasahab Phalke Award

  1. Eminent film director and actor Kasinathuni Viswanath received Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
  2. Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the country’s highest award in cinema and was given by the government for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.
  3. Vishwanath has directed 50 films, known for their strong content, endearing narrative, honest handling and cultural authenticity.

“One IP- Two Dispensaries” and “Aadhaar Based Online Claim Submission” launched

  1. “One IP- Two Dispensaries” and “Aadhaar based Online Claim Submission” was launched by Minister of State (I/C) for Labour and Employment on the occasion of International Labour Day 1 MAY 2017.
  2. Under One IP- Two Dispensaries scheme ESIC has given an option to an Insured Person (IP) to choose two dispensaries, one for self and another for family through an employer.
  3. Under Aadhaar based Online Claim Submission scheme all EPF Members who have activated their UAN and seeded their KYC (Aadhaar) with EPFO will be able to apply for PF final settlement, Pension withdrawal benefit  and PF part withdrawal  from the their UAN Interface directly.

Kerala's Aymanam Becomes Country's First Digitised Panchayat ward

  1. Aymanam ward in the Kerala district on became India’s first digitalised panchayat ward.
  2. Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar inaugurated the website of the first digitalised panchayat ward number 15 of Aymanam gram panchayat.

Assam’s Tezpur University student was selected for Young Scientist Award

  1. Sanjay Pratihar, a scientist at Assam’s Tezpur University, has been selected for the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA) medal for the Young Scientist Award, 2017.
  2. He was selected for his contribution to “multi-metal complexes, theoretical understanding, selective sensing of Hq2+ions and important applications in agriculture”.
  3. Sanjay Pratihar has done his PhD in Organometallic Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
  4. Sanjay Pratihar had earlier received ‘DST-INSPIRE Faculty’ award in 2012.  The INSA award consists of a bronze medal and a cash award of Rs. 25,000. The award will be presented during INSA’s anniversary meeting scheduled to be held in December.
  5. INSA Medal for Young Scientist was instituted in 1974 by the Indian National Science Academy. Till date, more than 700 young scientists have been recognised by the INSA awards.

India’s second tallest flag pole has been Inaugurated

  1. India’s second tallest flag pole has been Inaugurated in Kolhapur that has hieght of 303 feet and has been constructed in the Police training academy garden as a part of the Kolhapur beautification project.
  2. The poll is 90 metres tall and 60 metres wide and weighs 24 tonne. Chief Minister of Maharshtra inaugurated the pole by unfurling a national flag of 5400sq ft as a part of the ‘Maharashtra Din’ celebrations in the state.
  3. As an attraction, murals depicting the struggle for independence from 1857 to 1947 have been created inside the garden. The country’s tallest flag pole is located at the Indo-Pak Attari Border and is 360 feet high.
