First woman to scale Mt Everest twice in 5 days

  1. Arunachal Pradesh mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa has become the world’s first woman to scale Mt Everest twice in five days.
  2. Her ascent of the world’s tallest peak in the Himalayas at 7.45 am on 21st May 2017 was her fifth overall and the second after 16th May 2017.

India's Rohan Chakravarty won WWF International President’s Award 2017

  1. Rohan Chakravarty, a wildlife and environment cartoonist from India, has won WWF International President’s Award 2017 in a ceremony that was held recently in Manado, Indonesia for his efforts to change attitudes towards nature.
  2. The award is the top accolade given by WWF (World Wildlife Fund) to recognize leadership in young conservationists who are under the age of 30 from around the world.

Cochin Port Trust bags two awards

  1. Cochin Port Trust has received two Best Performance Awards from Ministry of Shipping for the highest growth in operating surplus and also for achieving third highest growth in cargo traffic among the major ports in the year 2016-17.
  2. The awards were received from Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari by P Raveendran, Chairman, and A V Ramana, Deputy Chairman, Cochin Port Trust at a function held at Goa Port Trust.

The 1888 hailstorm of Moradabad in India included among the five all-time deadly weather events

  1. Hailstorm of Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) in India that was came in 1888 has been identified by the United Nations weather agency – World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), as one of the five all-time deadly weather events of the world.
  2. This destructive hailstorm came on 30 April 1888 and killed 246 people and 1600 farm animals on this day. The hailstorms were as huge as the size of oranges and were to up to 2 feet in height at some places.
  3. In 1970, tropical cyclone of Bengladesh, which killed around 300,000 people was declared as extreme deadly weather condition in the world.
  4. In 1994 lightning-caused oil tank fire in Dronka, Egypt, which took 469 lives, while 21 people were killed by a single lightning bolt to a hut in the Manica Tribal Trust Lands in what was then Rhodesia.

India’s first uterus transplant was successfully done in Pune 

  1. On 18 May 2017, a team of doctors led by Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar successfully conducted India’s first uterus (womb) transplant at Pune’s Galaxy Care Hospital.
  2. The uterus was transplanted to a 21-year old woman who was born without it. The uterus was donated by her 41-year old mother.

SS Rajamouli’s magnum-opus Baahubali 2 became the first Indian film to earn Rs. 1,500 crore

  1. It also became the most successful Indian film overtaking Salman Khan starrer ‘Dangal’ that was released in 2016 and had grossed over Rs. 800 crore.
  2. The Hindi version of the film collected more than Rs. 508 crore in ten days. This is the sequel of “Baahubali : The Beginning” that was released in 2015.

“SAMADHAN” a doctrine to counter the Naxalite problem announced

  1. On 8th May 2017, Union Home Minister launched a new security operations doctrine called ‘SAMADHAN’ to counter Naxalism menace in the country.
  2. “SAMADHAN” stands for – Smart leadership, Aggressive strategy, Motivation and training, Actionable intelligence, Dashboard-based key performance indicators and key result areas, Harnessing technology, Action plan for each threat, No access to funding.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been shifted back from Kolkata to Raipur

  1. The strategic anti-Naxal operations command headquarters of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF the largest central armed police force or paramilitary force in India) has been shifted back from Kolkata to Raipur.
  2. In 2010, the central zone command headquarters was shifted from Raipur to Kolkata owing to logistics and connectivity issues. The recent decision comes at the backdrop of ambush in Sukma district that killed 37 jawans of the paramilitary force. The central zone command headquarters was raised on August 7, 2009, to carry out the deployment of troops to the States affected by Left Wing Extremism such as West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
  3. CRPF was established in 1939, under Crown Representative’s Police but after independence, it was made statutory after enactment of the CRPF Act, 1949. Its primary role is to assist States/Union Territories in police operations to maintain law and order and contain the insurgency.

India overtook China to become the world’s largest two-wheeler market

  1. As per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), India sold 17.7 million two-wheelers in 2016, against China’s sales of 16.8 million two-wheelers and thus India overtook China to become the number one two-wheeler market in the world.
  2. The change was happened due to a ban of motorcycles in many Chinese urban centres and thus China’s domestic motorcycle market has seen a downturn in recent years 

India elected as the President of the UN-Habitat

  1. After a gap of 10 years, for the third time India has been unanimously elected as the President of the UN-Habitat. Previously Indian was elected in 1998 and 2007. India was elected in UN-Habitat, an organ of the United Nation's Organisation (UNO) reports to the United Nations General Assembly.
  2. UN-Habitat  promotes socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements across the world.
  3. The UN-Habitat was established in 1978 and act as the Governing Council of UN-Habitat is an inter-governmental policy making and decision making body that aims to promote integral and comprehensive approach to human settlements, assist the countries and regions in addressing human settlement problems and strengthen cooperation among countries over the issue of human settlement.
