Explanation: “Tourist Visa on Arrival enabled by Electronic Travel Authorization’ (TVoA-ETA) was launched on 27 November 2014 to 44 countries at nine airports to facilitate short duration international travellers. The rename was done to ease the use of purpose as since the launch of this scheme, nearly 1.1 lakh visas have been issued by Government.

Deve Gowda and Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP). Mulayam Singh Yadav was made leader of the new entity. However the name an Flag is not yet finalize, therefore, six-member committee including H.D. Deve Gowda, Lalu Prasad, Sharad Yadav and Ramgopal Yadav will decide on issues such as the name and flag of the new party.

Explanation: As per the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension of the tenure of Ramesh Abhishek as Chairman, FMC for a period of three months beyond April 8, 2015 or till the merger of FMC with SEBI. Abhishek, a 1982 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, was given three-month extension each in July and October, last year. His third extension given in January ended on 7 April 2015.

The Union Govt. on 13 April 2015 notified a law pertaining to selection of judges for country’s courts. It paves the way to end nearly two decade old collegiums system. What is the name of this Commission?: National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC)

Explanation: For nearly two decades, judges have been appointed or transferred by a collegium – a group of five senior judges but as per the new notification issued by the government, now judges will be chosen by the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC). NJAC will comprise of a team of six members that includes the Chief Justice of India, the two most senior judges of the Supreme Court, two eminent persons, and the Law Minister. The two eminent Indians will be chosen in turn by the Chief Justice, the Prime Minister and the leader of the largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha. However, the new law – passed last year by parliament – has been challenged in the Supreme Court by a cluster of petitioners including leading advocates. Thus it is seen as obstacle, since the Supreme Court is hearing a case that seeks to have the law declared unconstitutional.

The Union Govt. during April 2015 notified new rules that restrict Governors’ official travel outside their respective states to 73 days in a calendar year. Thus the new law pertaining to this will also requires that Governors avoid or limit frequency of their visits to the home state. What is the name of this law?: Governors (Allowances and Privileges) Amendment Rules, 2015

Explanation: The duration of a governor’s official visits outside the state shall not exceed 20% of the days in a calendar year, i.e., 73 days according to new Rule. FOllowing are the highlight of new norms:

- As per the new norms, governors must seek the approval of the President and forward their communication in this regard, two weeks in advance for private visits outside the state and seven days in advance for official visits.

- For foreign travel, the presidential nod must be sought at least six weeks in advance for private as well as official visits.

- For an emergency official visit, the intimation may be sent to President’s secretariat as soon as the programme is finalized.

The 73-day travel restriction is aimed at curtailing the tendency of certain governors, especially those in charge of north-eastern states, to stay for extended periods outside the state.

Explanation:  D.Jayakanthan was considered a colossus in the world of Tamil literature and had won both the Jnanpith (in 2002) and Sahitya Akademi Awards. Jayakanthan at the age of 81 passed away at Chennai after a prolonged illness on 8 April.

Which port recently surpass Chennai Port Trust (CPT) in car handling volumes to become the largest car-exporting port of India?: Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL)

Explanation: This is the first time in recent years that the car handling volume of CPT has fallen below the 2-lakh mark. Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL) at Ennore handled 2.15 lakh cars of five carmakers during 2014-15 while Chennai Port Trust (CPT) handled 22,000 less. KPL was started as satellite port to the CPT in 2001 and is barely 25 km away from it.

Who is name as new next Chief Election Commissioner of India in 2015?: Dr. Nasim Zaidi

Explanation:  Zaidi hailed from 1976 batch IAS officer and has worked in the Civil Aviation Ministry for a long time. After Brahma retires on April 19, Zaidi will take charge and will have tenure up to July, 2017 when he attains the age of 65. An EC or a CEC has tenure of six years in office or 65 years of age, whichever is earlier. After Zaidi’s appointment, the government will set in motion the process to appoint two Election Commissioners to fill vacancies in the three-member body.
