The longest road tunnel in South Asia inaugurated

In the Historic move, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will formally open the longest road tunnel of South Asia- Chenani-Nashri Tunnel on 2nd April 2017.

Dharamshala become second capital of Himachal Pradesh
  1. Himachal Pradesh state cabinet on 2 March 2017 approved Dharamsala, situated in the snow-capped Dhauladhar range, as the second capital of the hill state.
  2. Currently Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh however due to hilly area it attract too much tourists and thus faces some logistical problems during winters especially due to snowfall.

M P Veerendra presented Moortidevi award
  1. Eminent Malayalam author and journalist M P Veerendra Kumar was today presented the 30th Moortidevi award by Bharatiya Jnanpith organisation.
  2. Kumar was chosen for the prestigious award for his Malayalam travelogue ‘Hymavathabhoovil’, which dwells upon ancient trails of Indian culture and highlights environmental concerns over “fragile mountain ecosystem”.
“Aadhaar” number will be made compulsory for availing the mid-day meal facility in schools 
  1. From 1 July 2017, more than a 100 million school children will compulsorily need Aadhaar, the 12-digit unique identification number of India, to avail their mid-day meal.
  2. The notification exempts Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir from the requirement at least for now.
  3. Mid-day meal (MDM) is a flagship central government scheme that aims to provide some amount of nutrition to students in government schools, special training centres and Madrasas supported under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. 
Vijayawada, Tirupati airports renamed
  1. The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet  approved proposals to rename the Vijayawada Airport and the Tirupati Airport.
  2. Vijayawada Airport in Gannavaram is renamed as ‘Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao-Amaravati Airport’ and Tirupati Airport has been renamed as ‘Sri Venkateswara Airport’ after Lord Venkateswara of the temple town.
Sanskrit Compulsory Subject in the schools
  1. The cabinet meeting chaired by CM Sarbananda Sonowal in Assam government has decided to make two subjects permanent in the state schools that are Sanskrit and computer education.
  2. By the end of next financial year, government is also planning to connect each panchayat of the state with Internet facility 
Dolphins count survey launched
  1. The government has launched the ever across-the-river survey from Narora in Uttar Pradesh to Bijnor on 1 March 2017 in the Ganga to determine the population of aquatic life, including that of endangered Gangetic dolphin.
  2. This survey will create a baseline scientific data for the Centre to take suitable measures to improve the quality of the river water.
INS Viraat, the world's oldest aircraft carrier decommissioned
  1. INS Viraat, the world's oldest aircraft carrier in active service, was decommissioned on 6 March 2016.
  2. INS Viraat, was the longest serving aircraft carrier that retired after serving the country for nearly three decades that was commissioned in Indian Navy in 1987.
  3. The ship's name figures in the Guinness book of World Records for being the oldest serving warship.
  4. Before serving to India, ship served Royal British Navy for 27 long years which was built in 1943, during the Second World War.

JNU wins Visitor's Awards 2017 for best university
  1. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has won the annual Visitor's Award for the 'Best University', 2017.
  2. Deepak Pant from the Central University of Himachal Pradesh won the Visitor's Award for 'Innovation' while the Visitor's Award for 'Research' has been jointly won by Shyam Sunder from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Professor Niranjan Karak from Tezpur University.

Indus Valley civilisation renamed as Sarasvati civilisation
  1. As the state government is restarting excavation at Kunal in Fatehabad district, Haryana Sarasvati Heritage Development Board (HSHDB) has decided to rename the Indus Valley civilisation as the Sarasvati river civilisation.
  2. The decision of changing the name is also sent to the government for approval.
  3. It is worth to notified that largest Harappan site Rakhigarhi and the oldest Bhirrana are both in Haryana.
