New types of blood cells discovered

  1. Scientists including Indian origin, have identified new types of blood cells in the human immune system through a aesearchers which use a technique called single-cell genomics to analyse gene expression patterns in individual human blood cells.
  2. The cells are new classes of types of white blood cells called dendritic cells and monocytes.

Mongolia launched its first satellite

  1. Mongolia launched its first satellite in partnership with Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) as part of its efforts to make use of new technology to diversify its resource-dependent economy.
  2. The 1,227-megahertz satellite, called Mongol Sat-1, will help landlocked Mongolia expand its television, telecoms and broadband services.

Space-based plane tracking

  1. Malaysia Airlines has become the first airline to sign an agreement for space-based flight tracking of its aircraft with Aireon, Sitoanair and FlightAware.
  2. Deal will enable it to monitor the flight paths of its aircraft anywhere in the world including over the polar regions and the most remote ocean.

Centre Clears 3,000 Crores For VVPATs

  1. After huge issue on recent election result by various political parties, government has agreed to release 3,000 crores to buy new electronic voting machines that print a paper receipt for each vote cast.
  2. As per the courts order, next general election in 2019 is to be run entirely with these upgraded machines.

  1. Manipur state has launched two web applications to check corruption and keep track of government funded projects and ensure transparency and accountability.
  2. The two web applications were Anti-Corruption Cell and Digital Application for Review by Public And Nation (DARPAN).

India’s first-ever industrial-articulated robot was launched

  1. “BRABO” - India’s first-ever industrial-articulated robot that was launched on 11 April 2017 by TAL Manufacturing Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, on 11 April 2017.
  2. BRABO is meant to complement the human workforce and perform repetitive, high volume, dangerous and time-consuming tasks from raw material handling to packaging of finished products. and thus it is expected to increase productivity by 15-30%, with a payback period of 15 to 18 months.

Cyber Physical Systems program launched by central Government
  1. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has initiated a Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) program with initial budget of Rs 100 crore in this current financial year and has been conceived as a Rs 3,000-crore exercise that would at first take root in some of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). 
  2. CPS is an interdisciplinary field that deals with the deployment of computer-based systems that do things in the physical world such as, the self-driven cars produced by Google and Tesla.

India’s first-ever bus running on cow-dung biogas was launched
  1. India’s first-ever bus running on cow-dung biogas was launched in Kolkata on 31 March 2017
  2. A Kolkata-based company, Phoenix India Research and Development Group, claimed to have launched India’s first-ever bus running on cow-dung biogas.
  3. The company has tied up with heavy vehicle major Ashok Leyland to manufacture the 54-seater bus at a cost of Rs 13 lakh approximately.
  4. Bus was launched on 31 March 2017 and will run between Ultadanga in the north and Garia in south Kolkata. At just Re. 1 for the 17.5 km stretch, the bus will be the cheapest mode of transport for a passenger in the country.

Android became more popular than Windows for the first time
  1. As per data released by global internet traffic monitoring agency StatCounter on 4 April 2017, Google’s Android has toppled Microsoft’s Windows as the world’s dominant computing platform in March 2017.
  2. First time ever that Android has become more popular than PC giant Microsoft’s Windows for the first time since the 1980s when Windows was launched as Android boasted a 37.93% market share compared with Windows’ 37.91%.

It has the potential to win as much as half the $10 billion market for female contraceptives worldwide and cut into the $3.2 billion of annual condom sales.
