IOC asked Usain Bolt hand back one of his nine Olympic gold medals
  1. Usain Bolt will have to hand back one of his nine Olympic gold medals after Jamaican team-mate Nesta Carter tested positive for a banned substance. 
  2. Carter was part of the Jamaican quartet that won the 4x100m in Beijing in 2008.
  3. His was one of 454 doping samples retested by the International Olympic Committee last year, and has been found to contain the prohibited substance methylhexaneamine.

Alibaba Becomes Worldwide Sponsor of Olympic Games
  1. International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group entered into a long-term partnership through 2028 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
  2. This makes Alibaba the worldwide sponsor of Olympic Games through 2028.
  3. With this Alibaba has become the first company in the world to make a long-term commitment to the IOC through 2028 as well as first Chinese company to commit to the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.

Indian Women Boxers Score 6 Medals In Serbia
  1. The 10-member team returned to the country early this morning with 6 medals after finishing third in the competition behind powerhouses Kazakhstan and Russia.
  2. Haryana-girl Neeraj (51kg), competing in his maiden international tournament, stood out with a gold medal, while Sarjubala Devi (48kg), Priyanka Chaudhary (60kg), Pooja (69kg) and Seema Punia settled for silver medals. Veteran Kavita Goyat (75kg) was the lone bronze-medallist.
  3. It is worth to mention that the team was left stranded at the airport for nearly 24 hours and without their luggage for a good part of the competition.
Manchester United Become Richest Football Club
  1. English Premier League side Manchester United became the world’s richest football club, with a record revenue of over $735 million (4,300 crore) for the 2015-16 season while Spain’s FC Barcelona finished second with $661.7 million & Real Madrid dropped to third.
  2. United regained first place in the Money League, breaking the 11-year hold that Spanish giants Real Madrid had on the top spot.

Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev inducted into Legends Club 'Hall of Fame' 
  1. Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev on 17 January 2017 was inducted into Legends Club 'Hall of Fame' in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  2. Madhav Apte, President of the Legends Club and the former Indian cricketer, presented the honour to Kapil Dev.
  3.  
  4. In 1979-80, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award, in 1982 with Padma Shri, in 1991 with the Padma Bhushan and in 2002, Wisden named him as the Indian Cricketer of the Century.
  5. Kapil Dev captained the Indian cricket team that won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 and is considered as one of the greatest all-rounders of all time.

‘Khelo India scheme’ National-level sports competition  inaugurated
  1. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports on 15 January 2017 inaugurated national level competitions under the ‘Khelo India scheme’ at the S.P. Mukherjee Swimming Pool complex in the Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi with objective to prepare well for future games and equip the budding talents with the best facilities and help them in honing their skills.
  2. Under this championship, besides swimming, various competitions of cycling, wrestling under different categories will be held till 21 January 2017. The venues for events have been kept open for public with free entry.

Simbu & Kitur Wins Mumbai Marathon
  1. Alphonce Simbu of Tanzania took 02:09:32 time to clinch first position in men’s category and Kenya’s Bornes Kitur won the women’s title by completing the distance in 02:29:02 in full marathon was flagged off from the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
  2. Among the Indian Men, Kheta Ram stood first by finishing the race in 2:19:51 and women, Jyoti Gawte finished at first place.

Gujarat scored maiden victory in Ranji Trophy
  1. Gujarat team won its maiden Ranji Trophy title as it defeated defending champions Mumbai in the finals of the 2016-17 edition on 14 January 2017.
  2. Gujarat became only the fourth team to be crowned domestic champions in all three formats. The other three teams are UP, TN and Bengal. 
  3. Gujarat won the Ranji trophy after long wait and first in 66 years.
Chennai Smashers won maiden PBL
  1. Chennai Smashers won maiden the 2017 Premier Badminton League (PBL) title after defeating Mumbai Rockets in the finals 4-3 in a pulsating summit clash at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on 14 January 2017.
  2. The first edition of PBL (2013) was won by Hyderabad Hotshots while 2016 edition was won by Delhi Acers.
  3. PBL was earlier known as Indian Badminton League (IBL) when founded in 2013. It is a franchisee league managed and commercially owned by the Badminton Association of India (BAI).
